Sleep is not downtime. It is the nightly repair window where your body clears metabolic waste, consolidates memory, and recalibrates hormones that influence how fast you age. Shortchanging sleep shows up in biological age estimates long before it shows up in a doctor’s office.
Research across large cohorts links chronic short sleep (under about 6 hours) with higher markers of systemic inflammation, poorer glucose control, and accelerated vascular aging. Quality matters as much as duration: fragmented sleep can leave you “in bed for 8 hours” while still biologically underslept.
Three practical moves
- Anchor wake time. Same wake-up within 30 minutes, seven days a week, stabilizes circadian rhythm faster than an irregular late sleep-in.
- Light before screens. 5–10 minutes of outdoor light within an hour of waking improves nighttime melatonin timing.
- Cut the last caffeine window. For most adults, stop caffeine 8–10 hours before target bedtime.
